Long periods of non-use
If you are not planning to use the stove for the summer or it’s going to be out of use for longer than a few days for other reason, leave the door slightly open. This will help to create a flow of air through your appliance which will help avoid any corrosion to the system.
Your stove warranty terms and conditions may stipulate that the maintenance and service of the stove must be carried out by a registered installer or other approved competent person.
Chimney Sweeping
Calling upon the service of chimney sweep at least once-a-year is a vital part of your stove maintenance. Failing to do so can lead to a build-up of creosote throughout the system and subsequent risk of chimney fires, it also reduces the efficiency of your stove, which can bring additional problems.
Servicing
Get your stove serviced yearly, preferably at the end of the heating season to keep it running efficiently and safely. Getting it done in the summer is a good option because if you need to wait for any spare parts your stove will be in good working condition by the time the weather gets cooler. A clogged stove will also require a greater amount of fuel to burn.
Carbon Monoxide Alarm
You should test your CO alarm every week.
Remember CO kills and needs to be taken seriously.
Glass
We recommend you use a glass cleaner as and when needed to keep the glass in it’s best condition.
Lighting your wood burning stove
Step One
Place a natural firelighter on the grate or fire bed. Start stacking softwood kindling jenga style 3 or 4 rows high. This method ensures sufficient airflow between each piece of kindling.
Step Three
Make sure all the air vents are fully open before setting the firelighter alight, leave the stove door ajar slightly to enhance the airflow and speed up the lighting process.
Step Two
Gently rest one or two small kiln dried logs up against the kindling stack. Compressed oak briquettes are an excellent addition or even substitute to logs at this stage.
Step Four
Now light your firelighter.
Once the fire is burning vigorously you can close the door fully and add logs as you need them.
TIP
Warm fuel ignites easier
Always bring your fuel inside to keep warm before burning. Fireside accessories such as log baskets are perfect for this reason.
